42 tells the inspiring true story of African-American baseball player, Jackie Robinson (Chadwick Boseman). Robinson, being the first African-American player to play in the MLB, faces seemingly endless prejudice from the public, other players and even his own teammates in this exceptional biopic.

Cinematography 19/20

The cinematography of 42 is simply sublime. While lighting is used well, the true greatness of this film stems from the simplistic yet effective use of camera angles to show every event in the film to its fullest. The music captures the mood of each scene perfectly as the viewer is enticed from start to finish.

Main Cast 20/20

Chadwick Boseman's performance as Jackie Robinson enables the viewer to understand the full extent of the emotions that Robinson is forced to internalise due to the public prying for a reaction as Robinson withstands excessive waves of racism on and off the field.

Supporting Cast 20/20

The most impressive aspect of this film is the performance of Harrison Ford as team owner, Branch Rickey. In the film's opening scenes, the viewer is completely immersed by the incredible acting of Ford as he proposes the idea of bringing the MLB's first African American player to the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Originality 17/20

Jackie Robinson has had several biopics made about his life, but none truly capture the racial oppression that Robinson endured as accurately as 42. The portrayal of racism in this film make it one of the greatest sports films of all time.

Story 20/20

Based on true events, the story of 42 is captured brilliantly in this simple (but exceptional) representation of Jackie Robinson's journey to the MLB. The film displays accurately how the public's perception of African American people quickly shifted as people witnessed the bravery of Jackie Robinson to become the first African-American in the MLB.

Overall 96/100, PLATINUM

This biopic is truly breathtaking. No film has represented the hardship ensured by so many people, including but not limited to Jackie Robinson, to achieve a small step in ending racism as 42
